Interview with Basler China | focus on research and development high cost-effective products, dedicated to develop eco - system ecological circle
2021-03-27

On March 18th, in the China (Shanghai) Machine Vision Exhibition, BASLER CHINA attracted numerous visitors to visit with its novel and grand booth design. In the booth of BASLER, a number of new products and demonstration systems were also on display.

During the exhibition, Mr. Miao Yongshuai, Vice General Manager of Basler China, accepted an exclusive interview with the reporter of the organizer and talked about the new products and demonstration system in this exhibition. He also talked about the internal demand logic of the industry and the forecast of market growth in related application fields.

Topic 1: Building the Eco-system Ecosystem

In the center of the booth, surrounded by the audience, came into view a robot familiar to industrial scenes. Basler is promoting the construction of the EcoSystem. In today's industrial market environment, what do customers need now? Customers no longer want just an industrial camera, they need more is a total solution. For example, in a specific application scene inside, the core computer vision technology and automatic identification integration of the solution.

Basler's ecological partner, Lawson, uses the Basler camera as the core technology to build a 3D camera with its robot arm. The robot arm supported by the computer vision scheme can realize intelligent sorting and intelligent dismantling. For the customer, the concept is an Eco Partners solution, where Basler and its partners work together to provide the final solution.

Basler is committed to creating such an ecosystem in China, which is also a future development direction from the perspective of technology and customer needs. Clients increasingly want to manage a more streamlined list themselves. If the overall solution is provided, it will at least solve the customer's workload in supply chain management.

Topic 2: Faster and cheaper

In this exhibition, Basler China brought their AI solutions. The core technology is the very hot technology -- deep learning. Basler's deep learning solution is different from deep learning in the traditional sense. Other existing solutions are mostly solved by GPU or industrial computer, while Basler's solution is based on FPGA to provide deep learning solution, which is faster, can effectively reduce CPU load, and has better performance. It is nearly 20 times higher than traditional solutions, and the cost is at least 20 percent lower than the same period last year.

At the same time, Basler China also launched two series of new products: Basler Ace 2 Pregius S and Basler Boost XGS. These new products are consistent with the innovative concept that Basler has been sticking to for many years.

In the interview, General Manager Miao introduced the development history of industrial cameras and mentioned that Basler is not only one of the world's earliest industrial camera manufacturers using CMOS chips, but also one of the standard makers in the field of industrial cameras and computer vision.

The ACE 2 series is capable of integrating up to 24 megapixel resolution and a 1.2-inch chip in a 29×29mm camera size, also setting an industry standard. In the case of such a high resolution and large chip size, it is a very challenging task in the field of industrial design to continue to maintain the size design of the product shape of 29×29mm. To be able to complete mass production is also a demonstration of innovation and ability. Another highlight of the Ace 2 series is the use of Sony's Pregius S series chips. This series of chips is the first to apply backlight technology to global shutters, enabling greater resolution in a smaller space while ensuring superior image quality.

The new Boost series is based On ON Semi's new XGS chip, which has a pixel size of 3.2 μm and features high quantum efficiency, high dynamic range and low noise. The Boost cameras unveiled at the show are integrated with 20, 32, and 45 megapixel chips, available in black and white and color versions for each resolution, with CXP2.0 interface technology offering 45, 36, and 16fps frame speeds, respectively. In terms of resolution, image quality and frame speed, it can perfectly replace the discontinued large-target CCD camera, which can effectively prevent users from being forced to upgrade and increase the cost due to the discontinued CCD camera.

Topic 3: Automation, 3C, medical and logistics applications will grow rapidly

First, from a global perspective, Miao believes that the automation industry will maintain its current high growth due to the aging of the world's population and comprehensive industrial upgrading. There is a huge demand for automation products in manufacturing automation and semiconductor industry. The primary application of automation is to replace manual work with mechanical arms to achieve simple, repetitive work. And now the robot, is gradually upgraded to intelligent robot. It can be predicted that robots in the future can work more efficiently like people, and it will be more intelligent. These require the help of computer vision or even deep learning. Basler is able to provide a solution that supports this upgrade, and we see the industry as a whole growing in the future.

Second, applications in the 3C field are still considerable. The demand for 3C automation has continued to grow rapidly over the years, and the huge demand behind it still exists.

Who changed the whole 3C landscape? The obvious answer is Apple. Apple from product design to manufacturing process technology direction on the overall lead time and others to create differentiation, leading to the field will usher in high growth, the next step of the impact of it and improve the automation of similar computer vision and its solutions, especially for the resolution of the camera, frame rate, the target surface, etc. More than 80% of the world's OLED screen production capacity, for example, is in China. In addition, about 70% of the world's production capacity of 3C products is also in China. 3C products are one of the important industries that use the most screens. A large number of screens need industrial cameras to achieve high frame rate and high resolution detection.

Third, due to the impact of the epidemic, the demand for access to medical automation has also increased rapidly in the past two years. Vaccine ampoules cannot be manufactured in many countries, and the production process requires a lot of sand, and it is a special kind of sand. Automated equipment is used to check the bottles for impurities during the manufacturing process and after the vaccine is injected, it is also tested. These high-speed production and inspection processes are all realized by the visual automation system, so the automatic detection of computer vision in the next few years will also be closely related to the development of the application of the medical industry. In the past two years, the production of masks and protective clothing has required a large number of visual applications. With a growing demand for protective and sanitary products across countries, we can expect medical automation to remain one of the larger and fastest-growing market segments until at least 2023.

Fourth, the logistics industry is also full of opportunities, especially in China, which is very worthy of attention. In the 14th Five-Year Plan, China will build more than 150 unmanned warehouses in the next five to 10 years. In the first-tier cities, how does Jingdong do the same day delivery before 11 o 'clock? It has large inventories, relies on efficient unmanned warehouses, robot identification and sorting, and AGV technology, which combine to achieve accurate and efficient delivery of goods.

The above unmanned warehouse of Jingdong has largely adopted Basler's visual product scheme, which is also one of the successful cases of Basler's win-win cooperation through creating the ecosystem. Among them, it is worth mentioning that Basler products have performed well in the unmanned warehouse project, achieving three years of failure free and zero complaints.
